How it works on Joyle

  1. 1

    Create the group

Pick a name, a date and a budget per gift. Add everyone yourself, or just share one invite link in the group chat.

  2. 2

    Draw names

One tap. Each person sees only who they're buying for. You can keep couples or roommates from drawing each other.

  3. 3

    Wishlists and secret questions

Everyone adds a few wishes. Stuck? Ask your match a question without giving yourself away. They can answer, still not knowing it's you.

The rules, in short

Secret Santa (also called Kris Kringle or a gift exchange) is simple: everyone draws a name, buys one gift for that person, and nobody knows who drew whom until the swap.

  • Everyone buys one gift, for one person.
  • Agree on a budget, and stick to it.
  • Keep it secret until the gifts are opened.
  • Pick a date for the swap, in person or by post.

How to pick a budget

A budget keeps things fair: nobody feels awkward about spending too little or too much. At work, $15–25 is common. Friends often go for $25–40, and families sometimes go higher, because each person buys one good gift instead of many small ones.

Whatever you choose, make sure everyone can see it. On Joyle the budget shows next to every wishlist.

A simple timeline

  • 3–4 weeks before: create the group and invite everyone.
  • 2–3 weeks before: draw names, once everyone has joined.
  • Up to 2 weeks before: everyone adds their wishes.
  • The week before: last questions to your match, then buy and wrap.
  • Swap day: open the gifts and try to guess who your Santa was.

At work, or far apart

For an office group, keep the budget modest, make joining optional and nudge people toward practical wishes. If people live in different cities, agree to order online and ship straight to your match, and share addresses privately. You can open the gifts together on a video call.

Gift ideas by budget

The best idea is still the one on their wishlist.

Questions people ask

How do you draw names for Secret Santa online?

Create a group on Joyle, add the people or share the invite link, and tap Draw names. Each person sees their match privately, on their own phone.

Can the organizer see who got whom?

No. The pairs are hidden from everyone, including the organizer, so the organizer can play too.

Can I stop couples from drawing each other?

Yes. Before the draw, add exclusions so certain people can't draw each other.

Do people need an account or an app?

No. Guests join from a link with just their name, in the browser. Only the organizer creates an account.

What if someone joins after the draw?

The organizer can undo the draw, add the person and draw again. It's best to do this before anyone has bought a gift.

Is it free?

Yes, for groups of up to 10 people. Bigger groups can unlock Joyle Plus with a one-time payment for the event.
